Food Waste is Enormous in the U.S.

We all throw some stuff away – it’s inevitable in our busy lifestyles. But this report from MSNBC.com makes it look like the problem is almost endemic to Americans.

Here is an excerpt from the report:

Hard data is still being collected, but experts at the Reuters Food and Agriculture Summit in Chicago this week said an estimated 30 percent to 50 percent of the food produced in the world goes uneaten.

The average American throws away 33 pounds of food each month — about $40 worth — according to the Natural Resources Defense Council2 11pxw Food Waste is Enormous in the U.S., which plans to publish a report on food waste in April.

Part of the Co-op’s new vision is food awareness. If we can reconnect to the importance of food, we may again value it for what it means to our health, well being and survival. Perhaps then we will make sure we use as much as we can of this invaluable resource.
