Customer Protection at the Yelm Food Co-op

Customer Protection

Here is an innovative solution that our co-manager Emily Ranken came up with to reduce the exposure our customers have from the cashiers and the cashiers from the customers.

These Plexiglas shields hang from the ceiling with a gap at the bottom to allow products to be put on the register counter and for the customer to sign their credit card receipt.

Thanks to Emily and Jeff King for this great contribution to our store!

Turkey Prices Slashed at the Yelm Food Co-op!

turkey

Photo by 🇨🇭 Claudio Schwarz | @purzlbaum on Unsplash

All turkeys at the Yelm Food Co-op are now on sale at a great price!

But quantities are limited..

Turkey in March?

Why now? With so many people staying at home with time on their hands, here’s our suggestion. Buy one of these free-range, GMO-free or organic turkeys and use your favorite turkey dinner recipe to start.

Then carve all the meat off the bones and use the carcass to make a yummy soup once again using your favorite recipe. A nice one is down below, if you need an idea.

With the meat you took off the bones and what you recover when you make the soup, start canning. Can the soup as well. You get one really nice meal at the beginning as a Thanksgiving celebration that your family is well – being Thankful doesn’t only have to be done in November! And you’ll get several more meals later from what you canned.

If you need some help with the canning, there are tons of recipes online and many videos on YouTube for you to follow.

Great Turkey Soup recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 leftover turkey carcass (from a 14-pound turkey)
  • 3 quarts water
  • 2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) reduced-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 4 celery ribs, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, grated
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Dash poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • Salt, optional

Directions

In a stock pot, place turkey carcass, water and broth. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 4-5 hours.

Remove carcass from stock. Remove any meat and dice. Return to stock along with rice, onion, celery, carrots, bay leaf and poultry seasoning. Add remaining seasonings to taste. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat until the rice is cooked. Discard bay leaf.

Shout Out to our Working Members and Staff

working members

THESE are the times that try men’s souls”,

said Thomas Paine on December 23, 1776 in a treatise entitled The Crisis.

And so all the Staff and Working Members of the Yelm Food Co-op find themselves in a similar situation, but what makes the difference now is the incredible dedication of all those people. Pulling together, supporting each other, having a can-do attitude, going the extra mile, all of these phrases are true today in your Co-op.

We may have suppliers who make wrong deliveries or late deliveries or limit the quantities of what we can order, but the Co-op crew just goes with the flow and most members and customers understand that we can’t control it all.

We want our wonderful members and customers to know that we are doing everything we can to make sure you get served as well as possible. We are also doing our best to deal with the sanitation issues to make sure you stay healthy while shopping with us.

We also appreciate your help with the things like social distancing which seems to be helping in many other areas of the world.

Next time you’re in the store, a small word of “Thanks” to our staff and working members goes a long way!

Micronutrients and your Health

–by Tom Dewell, guest author

Earlier this month, we wrote that one of the best ways to protect yourself from the Coronavirus is to eat healthily. One of the things that a healthy diet includes is foods high in specific micronutrients.

So what are they? A definition from biochemistry is:

An essential nutrient, as a trace mineral or vitamin that is required by an organism in minute amounts.

Where to get your Micro-nutrients

So where can we get these nutrients? Here is a list of some of the “most nutrient-dense” foods available. I’m sourcing this from this website –The 11 Most Nutrient-Dense Foods on the Planet – which has lots more detail for you to check on yourself.

Salmon — and other fatty types of fish — contain the greatest amount of omega-3’s fatty acids.

Kale – Of all the healthy leafy greens, kale is the king. Contains, among other things, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K1, Vitamin B6 and lots of minerals

Garlic – is high in vitamins C, B1 and B6, calcium, potassium, copper, manganese and selenium and studies have shown it can help lower high blood pressure. Plus it is yummy!

So, that’s the first 5 out of our list of 11. check in with us next week for some more yummy sources of micronutrients. (Hint: one of them is very dark, a little bitter and full of glycine (n/d), arginine (n/d) and methionine (n/d).
